Green Festival Tree

Green Festival LogoWe'd like to thank everyone for being proactive with their endeavours to tidy up after themselves this year. However we have a long way to go, as I'm sure anyone who witnessed the leftover tents/rubbish in the campsites on Monday will agree. But we are making progress, the below stats speak for themselves. Lets keep making these leaps towards a cleaner festival!

We have worked with a number of environmental groups and consultancies, including Cultivate, Friends of the Earth and Ecocem, to begin the process of creating a Carbon Responsible Electric Picnic. As well as the strategies outlined above, we are working on a long term strategy to reduce our carbon footprint and, using Irish Verified Emission Reductions to offset all unavoidable energy consumption and associated emissions. Environmental Consultants will also be on site this year, identifying the main areas for improvement.

Cultivate host a large area where they work to communicate the message of reducing our environmental impact throughout the festival, and will be available to advise festival goers on these issues throughout the weekend. Our offset providers will also be on site, providing information to festival goers on the footprint of the festival and your own associated footprint, and strategies to reduce and offset this.

We are offsetting the emissions caused by the festivals energy consumption, using high quality, independently verified emission reductions (Offsets) available, generated in Ireland by Ecocem. In 2008 the scope of our Carbon Neutral Electric Picnic plan is limited to energy consumption to allow us time to monitor our current footprint and put in place the best impact reduction strategies possible. Following on from this we plan to put in place a 3 year plan, to make the Electric Picnic carbon neutral by 2011. We are aiming for a 30% reduction in Carbon Footprint over the next 3 years and we intend to offset all emissions created by the festival by 2009.

Traders
We ask all traders to issue the minimum packaging possible, asking them to use approved, compostable wooden cutlery and card disposables. As there are many paper alternatives we would like to significantly reduce the amount of plastic on site and polystyrene is not allowed in any form. We ask all participating traders to use Fair Traded & Organic products where possible, especially Teas, Coffees, Sugar Sachets, Drinking Chocolate & Bananas.

Recycling
We're hoping to surpass our successful recycling last year with a number of different recycling options. Find out more.

B.Y.E.
The Bring Your Empties campaign encourages people to be more conscientious about their litter and to help make it easy for them. Find out more.

Eco Cups
The Eco Cup system will be available again this year at the Electric Picnic. Find out more.

Traffic Management
We will be closely considering the traffic management plan this year to see how we can reduce congestion, associated parking problems and all the pollution that goes with it. We will also be encouraging festival goers to take public transport and we'll be launching a new website in the coming months to facilitate car pooling.

Travel
Electric Picnic are aware of the environmental impact of people travelling to the festival. Please don't drive – Use public transport to get to the festival. If you have to drive, car pool – see the Car Pool section

We've teamed up with Loco2, a low carbon travel company, to encourage people coming from the UK to take the train and ferry instead of fly. You can find all the details at www.loco2travel.com
