Electric Picnic Arts Trail 2009

1. SHRINE

Into the unknown, Los Angeles artist SHRINE arrives with the clothes on his back, a wish in his heart, and a gleam in his eye, to create an installation that inspires the people.  Laughing hands will construct a safe place for people to dream.  Witness the spontaneous transformation of rubbish, found objects, re-purposed wood, cans, wire, and other forgotten antiquities into a holy relic beauty.

2. BAMBOO GATEWAY

Gerard Minakawa and his crew of "bambuseros" are back this year to create a stunning new entrance to the Body & Soul site. The piece will be a permanent addition to the Stradbally Estate. Minakawa has been designing and building with bamboos from around the world for nearly a decade and is committed to spreading awareness of this amazing natural resource.

3. PEACE GARDEN

Christy Collard of future forest creates a beautiful permanent peace garden for everyone to take a moment out and reflect on life!

4. LOVE & TEARS FIRE INSTALLATION

The huge flames from 'Love & Tears' will send energy for our love and happiness and every hour its flames will touch the sky, reminding us of the pace of life.

5. HORTISCULPTURE

A multi-sensory extravaganza combining the elements of sculpture, plants , water , fire and sound, this fairytale garden will be a place to relax and reflect.

6. OVERHEAD AT THE PICNICE

Where did we get the gift of the gab? Why is this such a unique part of our culture. An oversized seat and seanachai stories of old promotes the art of storytelling and highlights the essence of being Irish. Specially designed lights create a green dappled water effect  and the pools display loops of digitally manipulated images drawn from aquatic aspects of nature mixed with mythological imagery.

7. IRISH ELK

Paying homage to a magnificent beast , the Irish Elk stands as symbol of strength representing current resilience in a time of difficulty, and a willingness to emerge from unfamiliar circumstances with pride.

8. EN ROUTE TO THE UNDERGROUND

An interactive piece involving carved sculptures and pyrography – a process of burning images into wood- this interactive installation will unfold over the course of the weekend whereby you festival goers will be given the opportunity to cycle the machine, enabling you to channel your energy into the finished piece.

9. BED TEMPLE

Craft artist  and long time member of the body and soul team Jane Groves creates a playful,  willow and reclaimed wood instillation a place for a few moments of complete relaxation!

10. GREEN BELT

Felix and co. have planted the Green Belt, an area for people who love nature, art and taking it easy for a minute or two! Half meadow, half rainforest and three-quarters art-installation, the Green Belt has sprouted up around the Green Room creating its own microclimate where things don't quite add up.

11. THE LOVE SEAT

At sunset the seat of love will glow, sit down and you too are guaranteed to fall in love…

12. CRYSTAL COBWEBS

Crystal installations have an ethereal feel to them and rely on the changing natural light to interact with you the viewer, with the pieces transforming from the day through to night. The crystal cobwebs are designed to enhance rather than detract from the natural surroundings and are both translucent and eyecatching!

13. WILLOW SCULPTURES

Towering over the entrance of  the Village Green these 17 ft high majestic Willow Women are returning to the Picnic to watch over the late night revelry and day time magic of the Village Green.

14. THE ART OF SUCH N SUCH

An interactive landscape of cutting edge Sculptural and Side Show Arts. Come get a load off your mind, cleanse the cranium and get your mojo workin through riding the Fleeble Flobbler, a 23 ft tall maniacal wood burning wobble clown that is driven by human force. Alongside this we will cleanse your craniums though the interactive “Bone Head” side show installation. Both of these artifacts will be presented to the festival by the Art of Such n Such artists through an organic sideshow style fire and variety show featuring “The Hot Toddies Flaming Cabaret”, “Fire Hazard” and “Further More”.

The Art of Such n Such is a collaborative experiment. The Vision is to create an art space involving the viewer in a participatory way breaking the boundaries between the art, the artists and the participants whom enter the space. We love working together sharing our ideas and innovations while having fun and instigating education and interaction. We push the art to another level reaching for more of what’s out there so come by to see and be part of our collaborative play ground.

15. WOODCOLLECTIVE - MEITHEAL ADHMAID / COLLABORATION IN WOOD PROJECT

The Wood Collective team will design and build a dynamic and sensual form at this year’s festival. The sculpture will explore form related attributes of timber encompassing conceptual ideas about sense of place & time, in parallel with exploring experimentally the structural, spatial, functional and acoustic qualities of wood, a sustainable and renewable material. The form will be assembled from simple elements, manipulated to create a responsive and dynamic structure, complemented by functional layering to house information on the life cycle of the material, its sustainable context as well as providing an accessible deck and seating element for the public with ambient lighting after dark. The project will be constructed over 3 days in full view of the public and documented to completion.

The team are supported by The National Council for Forestry Research & Development (COFORD) and assistance from the Irish Timber Industry. For further information & details see: Web:  www.woodcollective.ie Contact: info@woodcollective.ie

16. UP THE GARDEN PATH

A 15 feet tall painted Animal Totem held up by the luscious pink elephant welcomes you onto the Garden Path. This is the arcane world of Away With The Fairies multidimensional art formation and all our ingredients are sourced locally. Into the bizarre Circle of Wyrd, a journey by the One that makes you taller and the One that makes you smaller, morphed and mutated woodcarvings drawn from the inherent Spirit of Timber. Past the Bird Woman, looking into the Insanity Mirror.. Infinity contains refreshingly less than we thought it did, a freeing realization as this enormous Gilt Mirror encrusted with the stuff of life we hold so dear asks the question: “Do we really need it?”

Thank you for completing our conceptual art pieces by Being in them. Away with the Fairies are a small West Cork based Arts Collective, who create sculptural installations.

17. DEPAUL IRELAND ART GALLERY - 'Life’s No Picnic on the Streets'

Depaul Ireland are delighted to offer our residents the opportunity to take part in an art exhibition at Electric Picnic festival. For them, this is a unique and powerful opportunity to express themselves to wider society.

This is an exhibition of artwork created through a collaboration between three visual artists and the residents of three Depaul Ireland city hostels.  Through a series of workshops at the Backlane, Sundial House and Tus Nua projects the artists have worked with the residents helping them to explore their creativity and allowing their stories to unfold.

The overall project theme 'Life’s No Picnic on the Streets' has provided the opportunity for the residents to reflect on their own experiences of homelessness.  The resulting exhibition aims to give an insight into the joys and sorrows of the daily life of the homeless living in Dublin and to raise public awareness of the work of the Depaul Ireland.

18. BICYCLE ART

Dublin Cycling Campaign, Cyclist.ie, Dublin Bicycle Messengers, Rothar, Kerry Bicycle Festival and Cork Bicycle Festival will be adding colour and creativity at this years Picnic with their Bike Art. Using a mixture of funky bikes, bike parts, balloons and inner tubes, the cyclists will be creating bicycle sculptures and bicycle art in the Global Green.

19. Microchunk presents DEEPFIELD ECHO

Microchunk artists Overlap have created an audiovisual art installation that radiates a cold ethereal beauty tinged with nocturnal mystery. Flashing lights and panoramic sound music, faint female mystical voices and phosphorescent glows communicate a midnight call to a beautiful abduction of a 60s refrigerator sales model, deep in the forest at night...

20. GRAFFITI TRAIN– Mr Risto, Kreb, Artz plus friends

This is the fourth year that there has been live graffiti painting at the festival, with the return of artists, The mechanical Mr Risto (The Tender Trio) Kreb ( S.T.D. Squad ), Artz (I.T.P.), as well as new additions to last years line up, Jor And Kube and Omin (Foes). Each Artist involved has over a decade of experience in graffiti art and exhibitions. Over the course of the weekend the already eye catching sight of a train carriage in the middle of a field will become even more noticeable as it’s used as a canvas by this eclectic mix of artists.

21. BIN YOUR EMPTIES – RECYCLED ART

Do you like art? Are you discerning in your tastes? Are you open minded? We make sculptures from your waste, not just coz we like to show how cans, plastic and paper can be reused but because they look cool too. Please come to our HQ in the Global Green and help us make the CAN DRAGON, THE PAPER BIRD AND THE PLASTIC FISH. Just when you thought rubbish art couldn’t get any better check back at night when these sculptures are all lit up using our solar powered fairy lights. Kids of all ages are welcome. Simply bring an open mind and a smile.

This interactive and participatory art piece will develop and unfold over the weekend of the festival. Picnicers can express what the think, how they feel and what they are doing in these uncertain times.

23. ‘CASINO ROYAL’ BOAT – donated by Peter Donegan

The 1957 Royal Cruiser Mark II is reported to have been originally christened Casino Royale and allegedly featured in the James Bond movie of the same name in 1967. Fast forward to 2008 Peter Donegan gives it it’s inaugural land trip to the Bloom Festival where it featured, freshly painted pink (“to make people smile”) in his fully recyclable garden that he designed & landscaped for the festival. Wanting to find a good home for it after the festival he launched a national campaign on 2FM which is when we heard of it and were happy to adopt it in exchange for some festival tickets which were auctioned for the Niall Mellon Township Trust www.irishtownship.com where they went on to build a Garden of Hope community garden.

24 GARMENT GRAFFITI - Redress – One Stop Shop For Sustainable Fashion

Vivienne Westwood's new design manifesto is entitled simply 'DIY' ; Re-dress seconds this and for Electric Picnic  2009 asks you to get involved in a collaborative art project using last years discarded tents.  Help us knit a piece of sculpture with the tents discarded at last year’s festival or get involved in some garment graffiti around the site - The choice is yours – just get active!

25 TWINKLE TREES – Neutronyx Art Collective

The beautiful trees at Stradbally Hall always like to dress up for the occasion and this year is no exception. Watch these ones twinkle, glisten & shine as you meander by.

26. ALICE IN WONDERLAND MURAL - Gaetan Billault

Isn't the Electric Picnic some kind of Wonderland where after a few hours, sometimes less, everyone transform themselves into Alice. If you see people wearing blond wigs, in fact it's the transformation process, the first step to becoming this adorable Alice! Artist Gaetan Billault will be exhibiting at Electric Picnic this year his own interpretation of Alice in Wonderland. “I wanted to represent an atmosphere full of happiness. I like the Electric Picnic for the power it has to bring everyone back to childhood, like living in some sort of fairy tale.”

27. HUMAN ARCHWAY - Imogen Stafford

A life-size couple, holding hands above their head forming an archway. This environmental artwork has been built using earth & moss. Located in the Greencrafts area.

28. X-ROAD ARTS - Nic Piper & Marie Brett

An interactive mandala created by celebrating the Celtic season of Lughnasadh, alchemy & the harvest. This large installation has been built especially for Electric Picnic using natural, renewable and re-cycled materials and as a devotional artwork you are invited to walk amongst the pathways, sit within the shrine and light a candle. Located in the Greencrafts area.

29. PEARLY GATES – Jonas Liverod

Swedish artist Jonas Liverod (currently Artist in Residence at the IMMA in Dublin) will be collaborating with set-designer Rosalind Jellett on the entrance. Asked to work with the pearly gates theme, there is a big chance it ends up rather heathen and hallucinatory with a scandinavian-folklore-gone-wrong touch to it.. Jonas Liverod works internationally with recent shows in galleries and museums in Berlin, Chicago, Stockholm and Barcelona among others.www.jonasliverod.com
